Video: Cala De’ Medici and Elba

Cala De’ Medici: Unser erster Hafenaufenthalt am Italienischen Festland – die Marina ist ein Charterhafen an der Toskanischen Küste, Ausgangspunkt für Crews, die nach Elba und andere Inseln des Toskanischen Archipels wollen.

Elba ist die größte Insel des Toskanischen Archipels, auf die wir uns schon seit den Porquerolles freuen – endlich wieder eine Insel!

Aber erstmal erwarten wir Besuch auf der VAST: Yvonne und Franzi, zwei Ladies unseres Teams, um eine Woche gemeinsam mit uns zu arbeiten und zu workshoppen!

Nach ihrer etwas längeren Anreise über Pisa, können wir die beiden am Marina-Eingang abholen und erstmal das Gepäck an Bord verstauen, es wird noch etwas eingekauft und die Kabinen bezogen.

Unser erstes Ziel: eine Bucht an Elbas Nord-Ostküste, die bei den angesagten Wetterbedingungen guten Schutz bieten sollte. Ist aber nich so: schrecklicher Schwell, ein Fähranleger mit Wendepunkt in unmittelbarer Nähe und Seegras am Grund. Also haben wir in Porto Azzuro den Anker geworfen. Der Törn war erst schwachwindig, brachte aber dann im Laufe der 50 Seemeilen eine schöne Segelbrise. (Das konnten nicht alle an Bord genießen, aber nachdem der Schutz der Leeküste erreicht war, ging es uns allen wieder gleich gut…).

Eine Woche Arbeit im Team, zusammen planen, Workshop 2019, segeln, ankern, schwimmen, gemeinsames Yoga – remote work an Bord. Wir finden, ein voller Erfolg!

Verrückt, wie schnell die Zeit immer vergeht – kaum sind die Gäste da und wir haben abgelegt, planen wir schon wieder den Weg zum Hafen, in diesem Fall mussten wir zurück nach Cala De’ Medici. Ladies, das war toll, ihr seid immer herzlich willkommen!

VAST hat uns dann in einem weiteren Törn zurück nach Elba gebracht – vor Anker ist es einfach so viel besser, als im Hafen (solange das Wetter mitspielt jedenfalls, aber darauf kommen wir in einem separaten Post nochmal zurück).

Elba ist super – wir verholen uns in den Haupthafen, den ehemaligen „Eisenhafen“ Portoferraio, mit sehr gut geschütztem Fährhafen. Hier kommen Christina und Özgür an, nach ihrem Übersetzen vom Festland. Özgür hat uns schon auf der ersten VAST besucht, noch im Atlantik sind wir gemeinsam an der Algarve gesegelt (leider fast ohne Wind…).

Mit Christina und Özgür jedenfalls ankern in superschönen Buchten, erkunden Elba und (ein Teil der Crew) findet Napoleons „Stadt-Exil“. Wir nehmen die sehr interessante Seilbahn Mit den Beiden ging es weiter mit demauf zum Monte Capanne – sehr schöne Rundumsicht von da oben – und ankern in enger Nachbarschaft mit anderen Yachten vor Marciana Marina.

Wir feiern zusammen Geburtstag und essen sehr gut – sowohl auf Elba, als auch zum (Geburtstags-) Abschluss, als wir uns nach wenigen Tagen schon wieder in der Cala De’ Medici einfinden – danke Christina, danke Özgür, das war super!

Cala De ‚Medici: Our first port on the Italian mainland – the marina is a charter port on the Tuscan coast, starting point for crews who want sail to Elba and other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.

Elba is the largest island in the Tuscan archipelago – we have been looking forward to sailing here since the Porquerolles – finally another island!

But first we expect a visit on VAST: Yvonne and Franzi, two ladies of our team, to sail and  work on board with us for a week! After their journey over Pisa, we pick the two up at the marina entrance,  stow the luggage on board and prep the cabins after some las provisioning.

Our first destination: a bay on Elba’s north-east coast, which should offer good protection in the current weather conditions. But: terrible swell, a close by ferry terminal with turning point and seaweed at the bottom. So we dropped anchor in Porto Azzuro. The sail itself started only slightly windy, but then brought a beautiful sailing breeze for the 50 nautical miles. (Not everyone on board could enjoy that, but after we’ve reached Elba’s lee protection we all felt good again …).

A week’s work in a team, planning together in a 2019 workshop, some sailing, anchoring, swimming, yoga – and of course remote work on board. A complete success, we say!

But, crazy, how fast time always passes, as soon as the guests are with us, we have to plan again our way to the next drop-off-marina, in this case we had to go back to Cala De ‚Medici.

Vast heads back to Elba for another weeks round trip – at anchor it’s just so much better than in the marina (as long as the weather cooperates anyway, but we’ll come back to that in a separate post).

So, Elba is awesome – and once more we make our way to the main port, the former „iron port“ Portoferraio, a very well protected ferry port. Here arrive Christina and Özgür, after their crossing from the mainland. Özgür has already visited us on the first VAST, back in the Atlantic we sailed together in the Algarve (unfortunately almost without wind …).

So with Christina and Özgür we again head off to visit beautiful bays, explore Elba and (part of the crew) find Napoleon’s „city exile“. We take the very interesting cable car up to the Monte Capanne – very beautiful all around view from up there – and moor in close proximity to other yachts in front of Marciana Marina.

We celebrate birthday together and eat very well – both on Elba, as well as the (birthday) dinner after our return a couple of days later in Cala de ‚Medici. Thank you Christina, thank you Özgür, that was great!

In summary we just miss Elba, for sure one of the most beautiful islands this season!
